Unsplash
John Smith
PR Specialist, System Analyst, Python Developer, C++ Developer, Frontend Developer, System Administrator.

Resume layout and design: aerodynamic design
The first visual impression anyone will get of you is the design of your resume. What image do you want to project? Professional, clean, efficient. Think of the sleek, aerodynamics of a jet plane. You want a recruiter’s eye to flow through your resume and land on all the important details you carefully crafted.
While you want your application to be memorable, your first goal is for it to be readable. Here are some tips to that end:
- Proofread carefully to avoid an spelling, grammatical, or punctuation errors or choose an online resume builder such as our that includes a spellcheck function
- Create white space by varying your line lengths
- If you spill over to a second page, try not to break up sections
Expert tip
Try choosing a sans serif type such as Arial or Calibri for display text and a serif type such as Garamond or Constantia for your descriptions. Or try the opposite.
Airline pilot resume education example
The education section of your airline pilot resume is a compilation of your academic credentials. No need to put in your GPA or any classes you took unless they elevate your candidacy.
Because of your specialty certifications, you should add a separate section to call attention to them. Place it above your education section, or even above your employment history if you are just starting out.
Keep your education section simple, with just your academic listings. If you don’t have space for a separate certification section, you can call this section “Education and Certification” and include all the relevant information here.

What does an airline pilot do?
What does an airline pilot do? That’s a silly question, right? Airline pilots fly planes! But the job entails more than sitting in the cockpit.
Pilots are the crew leaders on the plane whether they be flying passenger or cargo aircraft. They ensure that the plane is ready for takeoff, coordinate routes, make sure weather conditions are favorable for flying, communicate with air traffic control and monitor all systems while the plane is in flight. In case of emergency, the pilot takes the helm to keep passengers and the crew safe.
On the ground, they are charged with keep up with company and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations and must attend training and testing sessions regularly.
Expert tip
Getting off the ground

- Private pilot, which can take anywhere from two months to two years
- Instrument rating, which takes about six weeks
- Commercial pilot, which requires 250 hours in flight and testing; this can be completed in five months
- Multi-engine rating, which has no flight time requirement, but need the endorsement of an authorized instructor
- The Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate, which requires a minimum of 1,500 flight hours
- Finally, you are eligible for a commercial pilot job.

Airline pilot job market and outlook
This is a great time to look skyward! A post-COVID airline pilot shortage is on the way, predicts business analysts Oliver Wyman. Pilots must retire at 65 and the U.S. pilot population is heading that way quickly. Instability of demand for travel and diminished financial backing for pilot training are among the many reasons for the predicted shortage.
The study goes on to predict a global shortage of more than 400,000 pilots by 2029; the shortfall in the United States is predicted to be more than 20,000.
Statistical insight
Airline pilots, copilots and engineers earned a median salary of $160,970 per year, according to the . The lowest earners took home less than $47,570, while the top 10% had annual salaries of more than $208,000.
Preliminary Requirements
- Get a degree. Although a degree is not necessary to be able to fly a plane, a four-year Bachelor of Science degree is usually required by most commercial airlines. The degree may or may not be related to aeronautics or aviation.
- Serve your hours. Depending on the country’s laws, a pilot in training would usually need at least 250 hours of flight experience. Flight schools and qualified flight instructors help aspiring pilots gain the necessary experience to qualify for their licenses.
- Earn your license. After completing the required number of hours, you can now comply with the rest of the requirements for a commercial pilot’s license. To get your licence, you must pass a physical examination that ensures you have reasonably good vision and hearing. Contrary to popular belief, however, you can still be a pilot even if you need glasses as long as you meet the minimum requirements with your corrective instruments. Aside from this, you would also be required to pass a written exam as well as a skills test observed by a certified instructor.
- Take and pass other tests and training. Depending on the position you wish to apply to, there may be additional tests you must first pass before you can be qualified to fly commercial planes.
- Find a job and earn experience. Don’t expect that you would immediately be the captain of your aircraft. You must first gain flight time by working as a co-pilot or as a flight instructor before you can be hired at a major airline. Some pilots who are still starting out begin their careers by flying charter planes or finding employment in other industries.
- Keep going. After gaining the more experience and training, you can keep advancing in your career.

How to write a pilot resume
A pilot resume will contain many of the same sections found on a traditional resume sample including:
- The resume header
- The resume summary (aka profile or personal statement)
- The employment history section
- The resume skills section
- The education section
A pilot resume should clearly demonstrate a candidate’s ability to safely fly passengers and cargo from one place to another. A winning pilot resume should highlight the candidate’s outstanding flying skills and flight experience. You should also highlight your spatial awareness and superior coordination skills. Your resume should showcase your ability to make good decisions quickly and remain calm in tense situations. You should also indicate an ability to work well with other airline pilots and crew like flight attendants.
Expert tip
One of the easiest ways to make sure you include all of the required sections on your pilot resume is by using a resume template. These expert layouts allow you to mix and match sections and move them around as you see fit without all the hassle of reformatting and wondering if the information will still fit on one page. Check out Resume.io’s collection of professional templates which we recommend for pilot candidates.
Aviation resume examples: resume objective vs summary
Your first task is to decide the format of your resume.
Decision made, now work through your resume sections, starting at the top.
When applying for flight attendant jobs, no experience, you need a flight attendant resume objective.
Let’s see what that might look like:
Confident, dedicated professional seeking a fresh start in the airline industry after 7 years in hospitality and customer service. 4 years as a guest relations supervisor for West Hotels saw my team earn a 98.4% annual customer satisfaction score in 2020. Holder of CPR and AED certificates. Aiming for an entry-level position as a flight attendant to harness my customer-centric attitude.
What’s good about it?
It lays out exactly why they want the job, highlights skills needed in a flight attendant, and explains their professional background.
With experience under your belt, go for a resume summary, like this:
Considerate, safety-focussed flight attendant with 4 years experience as domestic cabin crew. Skytrax surveys show the highest passenger satisfaction on the continent with 99.2%. Seeking to move into an international airline and expand my skills base with Cathay Pacific as a senior flight attendant.
Why does this one work?
It demonstrates how successful they are in their current role by highlighting their customer satisfaction score. They give professional history plus solid, performance-based facts.
Flight attendant cover letter sample
It’s time to consider your cover letter for an airline job to include with your resume submission.
Do your resume first; it’ll make writing a cover letter based on that information easier.
Bear in mind, too, the main differences between a resume and a CV.
Let’s embark on an example of a great cover letter:
I am writing to apply for the position of a lead flight attendant with Cathay Pacific. My industry experience spans 4 years as a domestic crew with Jet Blue preceded by 7 years in hospitality. Each flight, I aim to create the perfect journey for passengers, whatever their travel purpose. My accumulated flight hours at Jet Blue totaled 3,500 per year on domestic routes. All my certifications are up to date, including First Aid, CPR, AED, CPI de-escalation training, and FAA Certificate of Demonstrated Proficiency. On top of my hands-on experience, I’ve supported 27 freshman attendants through their probation including service and safety coaching. My flights have received satisfaction ratings over 98%, higher than the company average of 96.2%. I am keen to expand my horizons and move into international flying as a lead flight attendant.
A recruiter will sit up and pay attention to this cover letter because it details solid experience, facts, and skills that are industry-relevant.

1, Advanced.
SDL Trados.

What does a pilot do?
Pilots are professional transportation specialists who operate aircrafts. Pilots transport passengers or cargo from one place to another. Pilots may have a combination or short and long trips, depending upon the nature of the flight. They might operate flights for leisure, commercial, or business purposes.
Statistical insight
How much do pilots make?
Let’s talk about money. The median pay for commercial pilots in 2022 was $148,900 per year. Of course, the amount you make will depend on the airline for which you work, your experience level, and the technical competencies you have.
The main goal of a pilot is to safely transport passengers or cargo in a timely manner. In order to do so, pilots must check weather patterns and communicate with air traffic control professionals to ensure a safe flight. Remaining well-rested and focused is also essential to a pilot’s success. An ideal candidate holds a bachelor’s degree in aircraft operations, aviation, aeronautical engineering, or a related field. You will also need licensure, training, and flight hours.
Statistical insight
Thinking of becoming a pilot? According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for commercial pilots is expected to increase by 4% between 2022 and 2032 – as fast as is average for other careers.
Job prospects tend to favor candidates applying for non-scheduled services like air ambulance operators and regional companies. These jobs have less strict requirements and attract fewer applications than the major airlines where competition can be tough.

Education, Training & Certification
To become a pilot, you will need to satisfy several different requirements, including education, training, and licensing:
- Training: Pilots receive their training in the military or by attending U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)-certified flight schools.
- Education: Most employers prefer to hire candidates who have a bachelor’s degree, although the minimum education requirement is two years of college. Coursework should include English, math, physics, and aeronautical engineering.
- Certification: Airline captains and first officers need a transport pilot certificate. To qualify for one, a pilot must be 23 years old with 1,500 hours of flight time and pass written and flight exams.
In addition, you must also meet a few other requirements to become a pilot. You must be least 18 years old and have 250 hours of flight experience, vision that is correctable to 20/20, and no physical handicap that may affect job performance. You will also have to pass physical and written exams, in addition to a flight exam during which you will demonstrate your flying ability to an FAA-designated examiner.
What Should Be Left Off As a Pilot Resume?
When crafting a pilot resume, it is important to ensure that it is tailored to the specific job and employer you are applying to. While there are no concrete rules about what to leave off a pilot resume, here are a few things that you may want to consider leaving out:
Irrelevant Work Experience
While you may have had many jobs in the past, not all of them may be relevant to the position you are applying for. Consider leaving off jobs that don’t relate to your experience or the position you are applying for.
Hobbies and Interests
While it can be tempting to add a section about your hobbies and interests, it’s generally not necessary or relevant to the job.
References
Most employers will request references separately, so there is no need to include them on your resume.
Ultimately, your resume should showcase your relevant experience, education, and skills clearly and concisely. It should highlight why you are the best candidate for the job.
